Don't dismiss them out of hand.

One of the (possibly legitimate) knocks on the Jones Act is slick admiralty lawyers have gone ambulance-chasing at offshore workers to the point where certain jobs (like diving) is now exclusively held by foreign workers because the liability is too high.Clayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11905149250548893628noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5876214674823177618.post-51359009193633392672010-06-28T09:14:28.994-06:002010-06-28T09:14:28.994-06:00City Business posted a great article? Well, it's a good thing not to have an ongoing disaster, right?

But that makes the resources (empty hospital beds, shipbuilding capability, hurricane response materials, etc) an inviting target for short-sighted budget cutters.

"Why the hell do we need volcano monitoring? Larger than simply protecting jobs, I think the Jones Act provisions you note protect our ability as a nation to effectively wage war when necessary. There are many other laws and regulations that require US-built parts and services to make sure that if we ever need to turn the nation's productive power to war, as we did for WWII, there will be both the manufacturing capacity and know-how to do so. Electronics, planes and ships are just some of the products protected by the government from total out-sourcing to other countries. From that point of view, I fully support the Jones Act.

Peace,

TimTimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09248664089124106737noreply@blogger.com
