Great job Clay! I've been poking around a little bit as well, but not with the kmz approach.
These are just randomized locations: http://terranondumcognita.jockomofeenanay.com/mashup.htm
I haven't determined the pros and cons of a straight api mashup vs. the Google Earth kmz approach.
And, by the way, I'm wondering where you're getting the crime data. The Times-Picayune? I was parsing the incident reports from the NOLA.com pages for a couple of years, but got tired of hunting them down because they post them so irregularly.
What we all need to do is pound down the doors at City Hall and the NOPD to demand community ownership of accurate and timely information (i.e., raw data). Then, this is going to have much more relevance on a day-to-day basis.
In addition to mapping, there are also a number of other products that could be developed to identify emerging trends and patterns.
Ultimately, I'd like to see the data warehoused in a database with a unique map for each neighborhood. We have a lot to talk about.
