Google Earth Question

I've looked all over the internet and have tried to figure out how to embed a Google Earth map from a .kmz file into a webpage and haven't quite been able to do it.

I've tried and tried and can't quite figure it out.

In the meantime, here's the city's murders to date.

UPDATE- Fixed the link.

  1. Clay, I know little to nothing about Gogle Earth, but here is an idea that may help. Its a bit more cumbersome but I have used it to good effect in the past.

Get an online account with an image hosting serice (Flickr is my choice- free or $20/year and its full of NOLABloggers. It also provides source code snippets for adding pics at various sizes to your posts). Use a screen capture tool to capture the map you want to present. Upload it and embed the image in your blog post.

A few extra steps, but once you get it down you can easily do this in just a few minutes. It will aso leave you with a static copy f the map at that point in time for future comparisons.

If you decide to go tat route and find you want a hand (improbable considering your level of computer proficiency) drop me an email and I will assist/advise.

LOVE the work you are doing!

  2. You indicated you want to 'embed' Earthlink map in your webpage. Could you clarify the term. I'm guessing you want the visitor to be able to manipulate the actual map inside the web page window instead of having to activate his/her Google Earth resident application to view the map.

If running their resident application isn't a problem, then all you would have to do, assuming Blogger allows you to store files for download, is provide a pagelink to the .kmz file stored at Blogger (or any other free storage like MyYahoo, etc). The visitor can either Open it or Save it to their computer and then Open it. Either way, that will run the Google Earth application resident on their machine.

If you want to embed the animated map into the webpage itself, then let me know and I'll work on it. In the mean time, here are some links you might glean info from.

This has a list of more links on the front page

A Google Earth Community website. Proably good for some useful info.

  4. I cut and pasted the example code from the Google API link in my second comment into a new Blogger
blog html edit window and all I got was 'Not allowed' for most of the html tags. I gave up. I then opened a notepad.txt file up on my own machine, pasted the code into it and changed .txt to .htm to convert it to a web page. I opened that up and got a perfectly working embedded Google map.

Moral of the story, you might not be able to do it on Blogger. But it only took about 5 minutes for the whole thing. Easy.

  5. And then I found this from a link at the Google API site. So I guess it is possible. Let me know if I'm in the ball park and I'll work on it some more.
