Would you stop?

Excellent social experiment written up in the Washington Post

I'd be willing to wager they'd have much better results in New Orleans.

Context IS everything. Bell woulda had a better time in the New York subways, because people kind of expect the music and the performances to be there, too. Transportation stops and stations are made to move people in one way: physically. Music can move us as well, but hey, there's a reason why history's musicians haven't typically made their living serenading stagecoaches.

New Orleanians would probably stop because there is a history here of that second line, of people dropping everything and following that pied piper, wherever he is and wherever he's a-going. This city is famous for music, period. Visitors who get it get it. Those who don't are truly tone-deaf - and possibly soul-deaf.
